Depression is a mental illness that requires professional treatment. The therapy should be managed by a psychiatrist who will be able to assess the current state of the patient at each stage. Treatment of depression is a process, in addition to a long-term one, which requires the constant adoption of measures for depression. In the event of a relapse, it is necessary to continue the therapy.

Every treatment of depression, even the most mild one, requires a correct diagnosis. The problem should be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist who will conduct a thorough interview with the patient. On this basis, the method of treatment and additional forms supporting a permanent exit from the disease will be determined.

Treatment of depression

Depression therapy is based on the regular taking of measures that are adjusted to the severity of depression and the severity of its symptoms. The classic division is divided into the following measures: sedative, activating and universal. Taking into account the chemical structure and mechanism of action, these drugs are divided into:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants - the oldest antidepressants, considered effective in the treatment of even the most severe cases of depression. Unfortunately, they cause a number of undesirable effects.
  • Selective serotonin capture inhibitors - the most popular means of depression, which are best tolerated by the body. However, they may cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea or indigestion.
  • Medicines with double mechanism of action - their action is focused on blocking reuptake of both serotonin and noradrenaline. They do not affect sexual performance, but patients declared increased appetite and constipation.
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors - medicines that are not available in Poland because they may lead to poisoning if the diet is inadequate. The new generation is safe in this respect.
  • Medicines from the SARI Group - used most frequently in case of sleep problems. Men may experience side effects in the form of pathological erection.
  • Tianeptin - significantly increases the release and reuptake of serotonin. Importantly, it suppresses the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal glandular axis reactions.
  • Agomelatin - shows agonistic properties in relation to melatonergic and serotonergic receptors.
