Flavonoids are substances that occur in plants. They have the ability to remove free radicals and therefore slow down the aging process. Apart from that, they are able to perform important anti-inflammatory, anticancer, detoxifying and antioxidant activities. Flavonoids should be present in the diet in potentially as much as possible.

Flavonoids are plant-derived compounds commonly found in vegetables and fruits. They are also part of some herbs. Due to differences in construction, they are divided into: flavanones, flavanols, flavanols, flavones, isoflavones, flavanols and anthocyanins. All these chemicals give the plants different colours, from yellow to orange to navy blue.

What are bioflavonoids?

Bioflavonoids are natural substances which are responsible for the colour variety of both fruits and vegetables. These compounds have a pro-health effect, so they are suitable for many health problems. Bioflavonoids are also used in the treatment of serious diseases and diseases, including cancer. The healthy properties of bioflavonoids make them useful in the therapeutic treatment of diseases such as diabetes, urinary and cardiovascular system diseases, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and atherosclerosis.

Effects and properties of flavonoids

Flavonoids are believed to pass from the gastrointestinal tract to the blood in an unchanged form. Some of them are metabolized mainly in the liver and intestines. The healthy effects of flavonoids result from their antioxidant activity, which however depends on the hydroxyl groups and their location. The main activities of flavonoids are..:

  • Increasing the stability of cell membranes
  • Aborting the free-radical reaction cascade
  • To reduce the production of reactive oxygen species in cells by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that contribute to their formation.
  • Chelation of transition ions of copper and iron, which prevents the development of free radicals.
  • All the properties of flavonoids are not known, but the most common skills are: anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-atherosclerosis, antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-allergic, detoxifying, diuretic, diastolic, anti-arrhythmic, hypotensive, anti-aggregative.

Thanks to their properties, flavonoids prevent cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, they strengthen and make blood vessels more flexible, which prevents clogging. The influence of flavonoids on enzymes contributes to lowering blood pressure and alleviating vasoconstriction. Flavonoids are extremely important in the diet of men with impotence because they improve blood flow.
